2022 Crozes-Hermitage Blanc, Domaine Mule Blanche, Paul Jaboulet Aîné, Rhône

Description

The blend is 95% Marsanne and only 5% Roussanne sourced from terraces of roiled pebbles on clay and limestone at around 140m altitude. No malolactic conversion in 2022 makes a delicate nose full of white flowers and peach notes, and a bright palate with apricot and orange flavours. The finish is clean and mineral with a hint of salinity.

15,000 bottles produced. An attractive nose, has a streak of crystalline honeycomb and lime skin. The palate is appealing and has good freshness along with some attractive fruit weight. I like the purity and there is a fresh, energetic, ripe stone-fruit finish.Drink 2023 - 2029Alistair Cooper MW, JancisRobinson.com (September 2023)

Rather neutral on the nose currently, but has weight and interest on the palate. Quite powerful, with gentle minerals and a pink grapefruit, bitter nip on the dry finish; a touch of honey lingers. 5% new oak, no malolactic. This is the cuvée that has until now been called La Mule Blanche.Drink 2023 - 2026matt_walls, Decanter (September 2023)

About this wine

Crozes-Hermitage

Crozes-Hermitage

This is the largest AC in the Northern Rhône, producing over half of the Northern Rhône’s total production. The appellation was created in 1937 with the single commune of Crozes, but today there are 11 communes. The Syrah variety is king, but Marsanne and Roussanne are also permitted (up to 15 percent). The wines vary hugely in quality and style, with the majority of the reds fairly light in style.
