2022 Château Belgrave, Haut-Médoc, Bordeaux

Description

Château Belgrave is on the St Laurent/St Julien border, separated from Château Lagrange by a small stream. This is a good source of honest, overachieving wine, and one of increasing finesse. This year winemaker Frédéric Bonnafous opted to co-ferment his Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot; the wine is suitably well integrated. There are appealing notes of cassis and sandalwood, and the palate is deep without any bitterness, while the tannins are muscular and solid. This looks like it will develop complexity in the barrel and then in the bottle. Drink 2027-2038.

Critics reviews

Jane Anson MW 93/100
Plenty of graphite and ink notes, cassis and bilberry fruits, firm tannic frame and a juicy finish. 32hl/h yield. Co-fermented Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon because they were unusually ripe at the same time, harvest from September 12 to 28. 3.72ph. Extensive vineyard work over past few years with cover crops, mulching, organic general cover to keep temperature low has helped maintain this attractive freshness and sense of subdued confidence. 25% new oak. jane_anson_mw, janeanson_com (May 2023)

57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot. Cask sample. Dark fruit with a hint of oak spice. Layered fruit and plenty of freshness. Tannins finely honed. Length and persistence. Well-constructed, classic Haut-Médoc. 13.5%. Drink 2028 – 2038jancis_robinson_mw MW, JancisRobinson.com (May 2023)

About this wine

Haut-Médoc

Haut-Médoc

Despite being as visually unprepossessing as the rest of the Médoc, this large red-wine appellation is home to some of the world’s greatest wines. Its 4,500 hectares of vineyards form a largely continuous strip that follows the Gironde from St Seurin-de-Cadourne to Blanquefort. All the great communes of the Left Bank fall within its boundaries: Margaux, St Julien, Pauillac and St Estèphe.
