2022 Villa de Corullón, Descendientes de J. Palacios, Bierzo, Spain

Description

2022 Corullón already feels gorgeous from the nose. Aromas of fresh red and black fruit mingle with gloriously fragrant and lifted notes of garden thyme, wild mint and sage. The palate is just so elegant, with a lovely fruit weight yet a focused line of slate.

The cranberry fruit feels somehow concentrated yet delicate simultaneously with a blueberry lift, vibrant purity, and fresh red apple. Carefully crafted, grainy tannins resolve seamlessly on the slightly savoury yet still juicy finish. This really is a delicious Corullón.

The 2022 Villa de Corullón has a pretty blueberry and cassis-tinged bouquet, quite pure, though I would like a bit more horsepower. The entry wine to the Corullón range. Sourced from some 20 vineyards across Corullón, it’s a field blend of Mencía with red and white grapes. Lightly floral, it starts with bright cherries and opens to an earthy, savoury, textured mid-palate, with the keynote fine lift of acidity, a characteristic of all these wines. Until recently, it was unknown to the international wine market yet, thanks to the investment and innovation that swept Spain in the 1990s, it now counts as one of the country’s rising stars, on a par with the likes of Rueda and Jumilla. Mencía is the primary grape, covering nearly two-thirds of the vineyards.
