2022 Moncerbal, Descendientes de J. Palacios, Bierzo, Spain

Description

Moncerbal has an exceptionally floral fragrance in 2022. It holds the scent of blossom with lily of the valley and lilac. There is almost a tangible, peach-skin softness and velvet touch to the aromas, exuding ripe blueberry fruit and a tight mineral core, bringing an absolute focus to the nose. 

The palate has a really tight savoury line to it. Ripe blue/black fruit envelopes, all but the fine mineral character remains with such gorgeous purity. This is a long, long Moncerbal, which holds such lovely, well-balanced weight in the mouth. It is fresh and not all about fruit at all, yet the fruit is there in spades. 

The brilliant juxtaposition in these wines is challenging to crystallise in words; this is truly a wine that goes beyond language.

Until recently, it was unknown to the international wine market yet, thanks to the investment and innovation that swept Spain in the 1990s, it now counts as one of the country’s rising stars, on a par with the likes of Rueda and Jumilla. Mencía is the primary grape, covering nearly two-thirds of the vineyards.
