2022 Les Aubaguetes, Álvaro Palacios, Priorat, Spain

Les Aubaguetes is a very old, 100% north-facing 1.79 hectare vineyard, planted in 1901. The nose is full of ripe red and black fruit and is scented, with hints of exotic spice and a beautiful line of fruit. Rounded red and black berries dominate which are sweet and pure yet which have an exceptionally juicy quality. The tannins are exquisitely fine, like chalk powder, coating the tongue but then resolving effortlessly. This is a crisp, elegant and pure expression of Les Aubaguetes.

The fruits for this wine have an incredible succulence whilst retaining their vibrancy and lift. These plump and juicy red cherries, raspberries and plums are incredibly aromatic and there is a touch of darker forest berries creeping in too. The tanins have a sweet but spicy edge to them and they are well defined. There is a whiff of burning incense which I love, smoky but with wonderful rich purfume. The underlying minerality here of cool wet gravel is very grounding and I am amazed how elegant this wine in for such a warm vintage. A special wine from vines planted in 1901.
