2022 Finca Dofí, Álvaro Palacios, Priorat, Spain

Description

Finca Dofí is a single vineyard wine made from a plot stretching 16 hectares across two village areas: La Baixada and Coll de Falset. The 2022 exudes soft, red and blue berry aromas on the nose. It is rounded and juicy with a lovely, pure character and stony minerality. 

This is not as rich an expression of Dofí as in some years, but instead, it has a superb, moreish, crunchy cranberry lick to the bright, cleansing, stone-pure finish. This is deliciously fine and a real triumph of this vintage.

A blend of 88% Garnacha, 9% Cariñena, 2% Picapoll and the balance made up of Garnacha Blanca and Macabeo, the 2022 Finca Dofi exudes freshness, with raspberry compote, black cherries and blueberries combining on the palate while violets and smoke leap out the glass. Notes of white pepper, cinnamon and sage add spice and a herbal touch, while a deeply mineral core means you can practically taste the slate it was grown on. The fruit is wrapped up in the most powdery tannins which seem to expand on your palate, culminate and then dissipate on an endless finish. Alvaro has crafted a very pretty and deeply powerful wine; fresh, floral and graceful, best enjoyed with some Presa Iberico.

Dofí (‘the dauphin’) is the step up from the Vi de Vila Gratallops. Fruit is sourced from three vineyards in the village, totalling 12.5ha. Aromatically it’s full of plump berries. The wine arrives like juice in the mouth, then blossom with fresh citrus. It’s a crisp, lively wine, with a fine texture, finishing with a flurry of savoury notes, plus a firm grip. The 2022 Finca Dofi comprises 88% Garnacha with Cariñena, Picapoli and a pinch of white varieties. It sports a well-defined bouquet with blackberry, raspberry and light pencil shaving scents, focused and understated, later unfurling temptingly with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine grip, bright and vivid with black cherries, hints of blueberry and a dab of allspice. From the areas of Camp d’en Piqué, Coll de Falstet and La Baixada in the village of Gratallops, vineyards totalling 12.5 ha, average yield 17.76 hl/ha. 27,860 bottles produced.Impressively structured yet manages to stay soft, silky and plush in the mouth.
