Description

Le Peu Morier 2022 is organic and from 70-year-old vines. It shows lovely yellow fruit, honeysuckle, dry grass, and ground almonds on the nose. It could only be barrel-fermented Chenin! The palate has juicy acidity, creamy texture, and rather more mineral intensity than the nose implies. It beautifully balances the fruity and savoury elements, which reflects the nature of the vineyard, a blend of clay and flint. This is gorgeous already but will age well, too. A Chardonnay this good would be triple the price.

If you are looking for a dry Loire Chenin, that’s perfect for drinking now. This is it. Vincent Carême is an absolute wizard with this variety, and his Le Peu Morier vineyard produces some of the region’s best whites. I love the rich quince fruit and hints of wild honey. You will feel the ripeness of the vintage in the creamy texture, but there’s still so much appetising acidity and a smoky minerality that indeed comes from the flint in this vineyard. This is so delicious now and will comfortably last for another five years.

The 2022 Le Peu Morier is a fully dry, barrel-fermented Chenin. Initially fruity on the nose with pear and florals. Oak spice and pastry notes join the flavour party on the palate. It is powerful and compact with a firm line, making for an uncompromising style. Sweet plum notes and a hint of residual sugar suggest it would be delightful with Chinese pork.Domaine Vincent Carême is one of the appellation’s leading lights. Starting in 1999, Vincent Carême was a member of the younger generation implementing what was viewed as artisanal ideas in the early 2000s, including organics and low sulfur regimes. Carême is now part of the Vouvray furniture, and these seemingly new ideas are now integral to the appellation’s ascendancy. Both a traditional method and a very successful pét-nat are in the domain range. When it comes to still wines, Carême’s taste preference is for dry styles, and that’s what you’ll mostly find in his chalky cellars. Based in the Touraine district of the Loire, the 2,000-hectare Vouvray appellation covers a range of dry, through off-dry, sweet to sparkling styles. Its Chenin Blanc vineyards give the wines vibrant acidity and a stony, floral and at times waxy character. Under perfect skies, the producers aim for moelleux sweet wines, hand-harvested by trie, often imbued with noble rot and rich with residual sugar.
