Description

To celebrate the 325th anniversary of Berry Bros. & Rudd, Benjamin Leroux has created this special bottling of 325 magnums. Les Cailles is one of the finest Premier Cru vineyards in Nuits-St Georges, and this is a true one-off. Benjamin vinified 25% of the fruit as whole bunches, which provide a seductive floral perfume and sensual texture. The nose bursts with juicy red berries, rose petals and sweet spice.

The palate is silken and elegant, with juicy summer berries around a core of chalky, limestone freshness. When young, it will have the fruit concentration to stand up to richer dishes like beef or Epoisses. With more age, as it takes on a more tertiary character, pair it with game, mushroom dishes or hard cheeses.

A bit of reduction at first seems to hide the complexity of this wine, but with time there is a lovely blueberry and currant fruit, a distinct minerality, and an almost ‘animal’ savoury note on the palate. The wine is very expressive on the palate, and more substantial and tannic than other offerings from Nuits. The 2021 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Cailles 1er Cru, a maiden release, sports a slightly deeper colour than some of Leroux's other cuvées. The nose is open with crushed strawberry and tomato vine scents. The palate is well-balanced with fine tannins. It's taut, fresh and quite tensile with an elegant, mineral finish.
