2021 Hermitage Rouge, Domaine Marc Sorrel, Rhône

Description

This wine is made from 60facing, gravelly Bessards. It is 100% de-stemmed this year to avoid underripe green notes. A bright, purple fruit and violet nose opens into a concentrated palate brimming with cherries. Graphite minerality and ultra-fine tannins lead to a precise, elegant finish. Hold this if you can.

Cask sample. Really vibrant blackberry fruit on the nose – meat and a very subtle, earthy graphite note. The palate is sleek, opulent and, at the same time, restrained. Very appealing, with finesse, fine-grained tannins and tension. Polished and lively (but perhaps missing some grunt?).Drink 2026 - 2036Alistair Cooper MW, JancisRobinson.com (December 2022)

A fruity, pure, clean and surprisingly ripe expression here. There’s good ripeness on the palate, and it’s surprisingly potent, with intense, driving tannins. Relatively light in concentration for a Hermitage, the tannins are just a touch grainy but it has great freshness. A relatively drinkable, tense style with real vibrancy. Slim and tense but with good energy. 10% from Les Bessards, picked early due to hail, so a bit under mature; then blended with very ripe parcels. All destemmed this year.Drink 2025 - 2033matt_walls, Decanter.com (October 2022)

About this wine

Hermitage

Hermitage

The most famous of all the northern Rhône appellations, its 120 hectares produce tiny quantities of very long-lived reds. The vines were grown in Roman times, although local folklore claims their origins to be 600 years earlier. The wines are powerful, with a deep colour and firm tannins, and the potential to age for many decades. The best Hermitage is produced from several climats blended together.
