2020 Hermitage, La Chapelle, Paul Jaboulet Aîné, Rhône

Description

This is sourced from low-yielding 40 to 100-year-old vines grown on the warmer, westerly lieux-dits of the Hermitage hill, Le Méal, Bessards, Greffieux and Rocoules. The palate is dense with layers of blackberries, damsons, black cherries, liquorice, tar, and allspice - a nod to the 15% new oak used in maturation, which brings complexity while leaving the emphasis on the purity of the fruit. Tannins are mouthcoating but gloriously fine and silky, while aromas of incense, violets, graphite, and a dash of acidity bring a fragrant and refreshing lift. For all its richness and ripe fruit flavours, this is crisper and more poised than recent vintages. Elegant and beautifully balanced, with a lingering finish.

Subdued but pure and profound. Tightly wound on the palate, the tannins powerful but refined, the fruit deep but underplayed. A saline edge that runs from start to finish adding length at the end. Needs to unfurl and expand but clearly has potential.Drink 2030 - 2045james_lawther MW, JancisRobinson.com (Oct 2021)

After the past several vintages, the 2020 Hermitage La Chapelle will need to add significant richness and concentration if it is to compete at that level. That said, it is still an excellent wine, with classic aromas of crushed stone, cassis, espresso and black olives. It's full-bodied, fine and silky, giving an impression of great elegance on the lingering finish.Drink 2024 - 2040Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)

About this wine

Hermitage

Hermitage

The most famous of all the northern Rhône appellations, its 120 hectares produce tiny quantities of very long-lived reds. The vines were grown in Roman times, although local folklore claims their origins to be 600 years earlier. The wines are powerful, with a deep colour and firm tannins, and the potential to age for many decades. The best Hermitage is produced from several climats blended together.
