2020 Barolo, Monprivato, Mascarello Giuseppe & Figlio, Piedmont, Italy

Monprivato is the crown jewel of Giuseppe Mascarello’s terroir and produces fruit for their flagship wine. The thin soils are rich in calcium carbonate, allowing Nebbiolo to express its complexity, structural elegance and beguiling aromatics.

Once again, Mascarello’s Monprivato reigns supreme. The aromatic, elegant and approachable 2020 vintage has resulted in an incredibly inviting Monprivato. You can nose the glass for minutes, noting such an array of aromas. There is an elegant floral top note, with bright cherries and ripe, juicy strawberries. Behind this is an earthiness and a note of tar (which I love to find in the best Barolos). The acidity is racy and balances the fruit intensity. The tannins are so velvety already and provide the structure to round out this sensational wine.
