2020 Kumeu River, Estate Chardonnay, Kumeu, New Zealand

Description

This 2020 Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay is top notch and shows similar personality traits to its humble winemaker Michael Brajkovich, MW. It boasts flavours of marzipan, hazelnut, lemon-grass and green apple and is Puligny esk in style with a modest price. As a big fan of White Burgundy it’s easy to appreciate this wine. It presents elegance, purity, precision and is obvious it has an exciting journey ahead of itself. There is a beautiful acidity leaving you to want more and more. The vibrant fruit is shown beautifully with lemon curd and lime aromas on the nose followed by a flinty, mineral quirkiness with hints of fig and peach whirling on the palate. Cellar this wine for 8-10 years and the rewards will be priceless!

Critics reviews

Jancis Robinson MW 17.5/20
Lightly but not excessively reductive on the nose. Already quite expansive on the nose with beautiful impact on the palate: citrus, blossom and really neat acidity without much astringency. Elegant and racy – almost lightweight on the mid palate and then it is impressively persistent. A thorough delight already. jancis_robinson_mw, JancisRobinson.com (June 2021)

The level of oaking in these wines is always very controlled but it sticks out more in the Estate creation than in all of the other wines and this means that it definitely needs more time. Bold, assertive and punchy, this is a grand-shaped wine for the money and the thought of opening a few magnums in five or six years’ time is indeed rather attractive. For now, though, keep your hands off this wine! matthew_jukes, MatthewJukes.com

There's a sense of calm to the 2020 Chardonnay Estate, a blend of six different sites. It is mellow, offering a plump cushion of Chardonnay goodness on the midpalate but not becoming heavy nor opulent, its youthful edge and fresh acidity tying it together into a precise finish. It offers classic subtle Chardonnay characters of Golden Delicious apple, white nectarine and a mere whiff of oak-derived smokiness. Well constructed, satisfying and elegant. 2021-27Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous.com
