Description

A dry year has again benefitted this vineyard, whose heavier soils help retain water. It’s located just below Caillerets, and it’s tempting to feel that there’s extra finesse from that proximity. Certainly, there’s weight, and complexity, too; this is a wine whose gravitas creeps up on you. At heart, it’s still a Volnay, with a gentle peony perfume.

The 2019 Volnay Les Lurets 1er Cru comes from a single parcel of 30-year-old vines. One barrel was quite reduced; another offered brambly red fruit, undergrowth and briary scents. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and fine acidity, and nicely focused, leading to an understated finish. Fine, although I think the Volnay Village is just as good.
