2019 Barolo, La Serra, Marcarini, Piedmont, Italy

The La Serra vineyard sits high on a small shoulder of La Morra hill, its name translating to “ridge” in the local dialect. Soil here is very similar to that of the more powerful Brunate cru, yet is a slightly cooler site which always yields firmness, freshness in the glass, and an archetypal La Morra style. The wine spent 56 days on its skins, showing the quality of the fruit picked at harvest, followed by two years in botti grande. This has a vertical nose which is herbal and perfumed. The palate is compact, with hidden details and smoky, floral hints. The tannins are firm, muscular and fine. This is very long, and needs time.
