Description

According to Alessandro, this vineyard has the highest proportion of limestone in Barolo, which adds a Serralunga-style structure to Monforte’s strength. This is mitigated a little by the vineyard’s altitude, which sits at 400m. The estate has 4 hectares here, but only 1 hectare from selected parcels is used for this wine. The wine shows a lot of elegance, with floral notes, and plenty of fruit. It appears initially lush for the vintage, but on the finish, the grainy and sandy tannins of the vintage and vineyard and reasserted. There is plenty to consider here.

Veglio's 2019 Barolo Castelletto is redolent of spice, menthol, licorice, sage and lavender. Incisive Monforte tannins and bright acids give the Castelletto its shape and a good bit of overall drive as well. I would cellar this for a few years and see what happens. Lustrous and just mid ruby with orange tinges. Sweet raspberry with savoury, salty, minerally notes and a little rich on the nose. With aeration there are hints of mint.
