2014 Château Haut-Batailley, Pauillac, Bordeaux

Description

Located in the very south of the Pauillac appellation, this property shares a similar maritime climate to that enjoyed by the Médoc: the Gironde estuary and the Bay of Biscay combine to act as a climate regulator, while the coastal pine forests shelter the vines from the westerly and north-westerly winds. This delightfully rewarding wine comes from a classic vintage. Cassis and cherry mix gracefully with smoke, cedar and spice. The fine-grained tannins offer a little grip, while the palate is fresh with a smooth, lingering finish.

Lovely textured, lifted black Cabernet fruit to the fore. Beautiful expression and an elegantly long finish.

Lots of energy here. Intense purple fruit, and lots of richness. Spicy fruit. Lots of richness and life. Very glossy and fills the palate. Very racy – like a racehorse. No excess of acid or dry tannins. Very neat and charming. Great clarity of purpose. jancis_robinson_mw MW - JancisRobinson.com - Apr 2015

The 2014 Haut Batailley has a very subtle bouquet, one that bided its time in the glass and then unfolded with scents of blackberry, briary, pencil box and light graphite scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, moderate weight, classic and perhaps conservative in style. Yet the harmony is just wonderful and it slips down the throat almost too easily. As such, I feel this is a more approachable Haut-Batailley compared to other vintages, yet it has the body to reward three of four years of bottle age.Neil Martin - 31/03/2017

About this wine

Pauillac

Pauillac

The aristocrat of the Médoc boasts 75 percent of the region’s First Growths, with Grand Cru Classés representing 84 percent of production. Pauillac's First Growths each have their own unique characteristics: Ch. Lafite Rothschild produces the region’s most aromatically-complex and subtly-flavoured wine, while – with its high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon – Ch. Mouton Rothschild can produce a decadently rich, fleshy and exotic wine.
