The twin limiting factors of the distillery’s comparatively small size and its late-20th-century propensity to be mothballed for years on end means that Ardbeg of this age is highly scarce. Trademark sooty smoke abounds alongside well-judged oak.

Wood notes support the immensely characterful spirit, especially on the supremely lengthy finish. Pair this with chocolate or chocolatey desserts. I find it nearly impossible not to desire a second glass, especially when shared with kindred spirits.
