Hambledon, Classic Cuvée, Sparkling, Hampshire, England

Description

52% Chardonnay, 32% Pinot Noir, and 17 % Pinot Meunier from the 2018 harvest, with tank-aged reserve wines added. Dosage 5.7 g/l.

Hambledon Vineyard has a long and fascinating history. Not only does the village have the reputation as the cradle of cricket, long before Lord’s, it seems, but it is also the location of the first English commercial vineyard, courtesy of the Francophile Sir Guy Salisbury Jones, who developed the vineyards in the early 1950s. After an uneventful hiatus, the vineyard was purchased by Ian Kellett in 1999, and his investments of both patience and capital are now yielding fruit, quite literally, in the form of some of the best-located Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes in the country.

Fruits from the 2011 harvest, with reserve wines added from 2010, this is a most impressive effort. Its lees-ageing imparts gentle biscuity notes and adds weight and structure to the first impressions, which recall English orchard fruit, yellow fruits, and quince.

The NV Classic Cuvée comes from chalky slopes on the evocatively named Windmill Down and comes mainly from the 2016 harvest, augmented by reserve wines, and bottled in June 2017 after a minimum of 35 months on the lees. The dosage is 4.5g/L. The voluminous bouquet displays scents of Braeburn apples, baking bread, light melon and shale-like aromas that are very harmonious and well-defined. The palate is fresh, with a sharp citric peel note on the entry that enlivens the senses. Taut and steelier than expected, this is a vibrant and tensile Brut whose salinity begs for some seafood to accompany it. Excellent.Drink 2020 - 2030Neil Martin, Vinous.com.com (July 2020)

The NV Classic Cuve is a blend of 40% Chardonnay, 31% Pinot Meunier and 29% Pinot Noir, based on the 2014 vintage and disgorged around March 2017. It has a fresh sea spray scented bouquet with lively dewy green apple scents. The palate is clean and fresh on the entry, harmonious in the mouth with just the right amount of creaminess towards the finish.Neil Martin - 30/06/2017

Creamy, with elegant green apple fruit and some nice nutty development. The high acidity provides freshness, and there is some complexity on the quite round palate. There is a lovely vibrancy and great length of finish. Decanter, 90 points

The base wine went through malolactic fermentation with battonage. Yeasty on the nose with citrus blossom, salted nuts and yellow apple. Generous mousse opens up to a full-on palate of brioche, citrus, green fruit acidity (8g/l) and depth of spiced red berries. Satisfying and long. The latest release is based on the 2018 vintage.Drink 2023 - 2028Sylvia Wu, Decanter.com (March 2023)
